Transitions To Permanence

★★★★★

“...was carried out in high professional standard that meet the needs of the young people and the adults"

Understanding things such as dysregulation and arousal in my YP is really important and helps me work out how to approach him in a positive way. I really enjoyed how the sessions were conducted and engaging with the facilitators as well as other carers.

What Is This Therapy?

Transitions to permanency is designed for children who are moving from fostering arrangements to adoptive or long-term fostering placements. Facilitators complete direct work with the foster family to gain insight into the child’s emotional needs using recorded play interventions. Using this information, facilitators continue to work with the family the child is transitioning to, so adults can develop an informed understanding of their unmet needs, patterns of behaviour and their experience of trauma through a therapeutic lens, at the earliest possible stage of the placement. The therapist will also complete some preliminary work with the child in preparation for the transition

When the time comes for the child to move to their new home, the therapist acts as someone familiar that can follow the child into their adoption.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this for?

This intervention for children/young people (age 4 onwards)

How many therapy sessions do we need to attend?

We generally provide 23 therapy sessions through the ASGSF once the child has moved to their new household. Prior to the transition we generally ask for a minimum of 6 sessions with the carer and child, which will be funded through the respective local authority.

Where is the service available?

We operate from South-East London, in a place called Sidcup. We use a therapy room which is specifically designed for the work we undertake and for children's with sensory needs.

How can I get started?

The first step is to simply reach out to us via email of by phone. Once we have your details we can provide you with all the necessary information needed to either apply for funding via the ASGSF or the local authority.

Where, how long for and what frequency are the sessions?

This intervention can be completed online or in person. Sometimes, we take a hybrid approach, with some sessions being completed online and others physically from our therapy room.

Each therapy session is one hour long and we meet on a weekly basis.

What does a typical intervention look like?

Firstly, a therapist will undertake therapeutic work with the carer and child to develop a stronger understanding of the child's triggers, expression of distress and understanding of how they feel about moving to their new home. Once the transition is made, the therapist will conduct adult only sessions with the adopter/ long term carer until such time, that it is appropriate to involve the child in our discussions.
