Theraplay®
★★★★★
“It was so helpful to engage with our son, with some of the Theraplay activities and then speak on Zoom later to understand his behaviours and some practical techniques we could use support him through difficult times.“
★★★★★
“Thanks Bradley so much for the therapy/play sessions. They have helped me and my daughter become closer and have been really helpful as a way of getting us both to communicate better"
★★★★★
“Elaine gave us insights into our son’s behaviour that helped us reframe tricky situations through the lens of what he was going through and why his brain works the way it does. Some was a reminder of things we needed to hear again, some was brand new insights; all of it was helpful and enabled us to better support him and our family.”
What Is This Therapy?
Theraplay® focuses on strengthening the bond between children and their parents (or caregivers). Theraplay® is a play based intervention that is a highly effective treatment intervention for traumatised children. It teaches parents/carers how to recognise triggers to behaviour, identification of cues from the child and responses from the parent, it addresses issues of children regulating thier behaviour and this intervention directly supports the parents/caregivers in creating change.
Theraplay® is active, interpersonal, and fun. It focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship, it addresses issues of the ‘here and now’; not just what happened in the past and it is appropriate for all ages– infancy through to adolescence.
Below is a brief video that talks about what Theraplay is and how it seeks to help families:

How can I get started?
The first step is to simply reach out to us via email of by phone. Once we have your details we can provide you with all the necessary information needed to either apply for funding via the ASGSF or the local authority.
Where, how long for and what frequency are the sessions?
This intervention can be completed online or in person. Sometimes, we take a hybrid approach, with some sessions being completed online and others physically from our therapy room.
Each therapy session is one hour long and we meet on a weekly basis.
Who is expected to attend the sessions?
This intervention is for you AND your child therefore, both of you will be asked to attend the sessions. Partners and spouses are also welcome to attend (but this would be dependant on the child).
What does a typical Theraplay intervention look like?
Every child, every parent and every family have unique needs which is observed and respected by our practitioners. Therefore, each Theraplay intervention will look slightly different. However, typically, we hold adult only sessions at the beginning of the intervention to gain a broad view of the family in question and the difficulties therein. We also use this time to discuss the approach we will be using and to role play scenarios, using Theraplay techniques, in preparation for the child to join the session.
Following this, we then invite the child into the session and begin the intervention. At regular intervals, we hold adult only feedback sessions so we can consider the information that has been brought into the room and to explore ways that we can shape our approach within therapy to enhance the child's sense of safety, whilst exploring tricky subjects.
