PACE for social workers and social care professionals

What you will learn
· Day 1, “PACE”: Day one is about developing an understanding about what PACE is, why it was developed and what the theoretical underpinnings of this approach are.
· Day 2, “how to drive a car”: Day 2 is titled “how to drive a car” because we liken this process to driving a car. On day 1 we learn how to operate a car and on day 2, we hit the road! We take the information from day 1 and learn how to apply it using lots of different scenarios, live enactments by the practitioner and videos of direct sessions.
· Day 3, “real life application”: Day 3 invites reflections about difficulties applying PACE within real life scenarios. This day focuses on what adults bring to conversations and so it is a journey of introspection and reflection about our experiences of giving and receiving PACE from other. Time is also allocated to providing practical strategies to enhance adults use of PACE principles.
Overview of trianing
This training is delivered by an experienced social worker and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy practitioner who uses PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) in everyday work with adults, children, and families. It recognises the experience, knowledge, and understanding that social workers already bring to their role, while showing how PACE can further strengthen their practice.
The course explores how these principles can be applied not only in supervision to model the language and approach we hope foster carers will use, but also across other areas of practice, including standard of care investigations, annual reviews, and the management of challenging aspects of practice. Overall, the training focuses on the practical application of therapeutic principles within the social work role and acknowledges the realities and complexities of using them in practice, particularly where they may differ from more traditional approaches inherent within social work practice.
