PACE approaches: A guide for interaction for parents and carers.

“I think it was an excellent course”

“I would recommend this training for every foster carer”

“This is hands down the best training course that I have attended in all the years that I have been a Foster Carer. Trainer has a clear breadth and depth of knowledge and an ability to translate that into real life solutions, including being extremely responsive and understanding of the challenges that specifically face Foster Carers.”

What will I learn?
  • · Day 1, “PACE”

Day one is about developing an understanding about what PACE is, why it was developed and what the
theoretical underpinnings of this approach are.

  • Day 2, “How to drive a car”

Day 2 is titled “how to drive a car” because we liken this process to driving a car. On day 1 we learn how to
operate a car and on day 2, we hit the road! We take the information from day 1 and learn how to apply it
using lots of different scenarios, live enactments by the practitioner and videos of direct sessions.

  • Day 3, “Real life application”

Day 3 invites reflections about difficulties applying PACE within real life scenarios. This day focuses on what
adults bring to conversations and so it is a journey of introspection and reflection about our experiences of
giving and receiving PACE from others. Time is also allocated to providing practical strategies to enhance
    adults use of PACE principles.

Overview of trianing

PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) provides an easily accessible framework for adults to use, to have conversations with their children about tricky subjects in a way which promotes
safety and understanding
.

PACE focuses on our interactions and places an emphasis on ways to engage in meaningful and
empathic dialogues to get the very most from our conversations with young people.

This training will help parents/carers navigate difficult conversations in a way which promotes connection rather than conflict and provides a great scaffolding to help people in heightened moments.
